Welcome to the Responsible Packaging Movement

What if we could all change the way our products are packaged by eliminating harmful, outdated materials that overflow the landfill, and replace them with earth-friendly options that work just as well? Let’s make it happen, together. #ReshapePackaging
Because We’re Better Together
At prAna, our mission is to create Clothing for Positive Change, a heartfelt promise to respect the planet and its people, always. Part of that journey takes us all that way back to 2010, when we first implemented a grassroots approach to reducing plastic in our packaging. And we’ve been reimagining product packaging ever since, doing our best to organize an industry-wide shift towards responsibly made options. Which brings us to this very moment.

Our goal is to completely eliminate plastic from our consumer packaging by 2021, as well as eliminate use of materials from ancient and endangered forests by 2022, and virgin forest fibers by 2025. That’s why we’ve joined forces with nonprofit organizations, 5 Gyres and Canopy, to help get us there.

But we need your help too.

We’re asking you, fellow brands, and our worldwide prAna community, to join us on this journey toward eliminating excess packaging waste from our supply chains in a responsible, long-lasting way. Together, let's #ReshapePackaging

Quote from Launch Partner Brand:
“Packaging has been a constant struggle for those building a sustainability framework for their companies and their own personal lives. The long-awaited Responsible Packaging Movement is instrumental in actively eliminating single-use plastic and virgin forest fiber from packaging. Accountability is key, action critical. We hope to see many other brands and individuals join this campaign and show that this is a problem that can be addressed, and through collectivism, will be resolved for the planet, its people and all its inhabitants.”

What is the Responsible Packaging Movement?
We’ve been working on this mission within our own walls for over 10 years. But we know that in order to make the biggest impact possible, we can’t do it alone. That’s why we’ve created this space, so that our fellow like-minded brands can join in the Responsible Packaging Movement, always with full respect of antitrust and other applicable laws. By creating room for collaboration, we all have a platform to share our best practices and learn together. And by sharing what we’ve experienced here at prAna during this decade of trial and error, our hope is that it will inspire other brands and offer the necessary guidance to jumpstart their own journeys.

We have two requests: First, you create your own goals around responsible packaging at your company, goals that align with this mission toward removing plastic packaging and virgin-forest-fiber packaging. And second, that you celebrate with your community by sharing the news that you’ve joined the Responsible Packaging Movement.
In just 5 easy steps you’ll be on your way.

  1. Create goals around responsible packaging for your brand. These goals should address reduction (preferably elimination) in plastic and reduction (preferably elimination) in virgin or non-FSC forest fibers.
  2. Share these goals with the prAna Sustainability Team via email. While sharing your goals publicly isn’t required, we highly encourage you to do so.
  3. Sign the provided simple Non-Disclosure Agreement to gain access to materials
  4. Provide contact information: name, telephone, and email of point person at your company regarding the Responsible Packaging Movement
  5. Tell your community you’ve joined prAna’s Responsible Packaging Movement by posting and tagging @prAna and #ReshapePackaging on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn (Social/PR collateral will be provided)

All information and questions should be sent to prAna_packaging@prana.com
You are certainly not in this alone. We realize that these are big goals and you’ll need support, tools, and a dedicated community to help you be successful. To get your team started, we’re happy to offer each brand a number of options, from webinars to guides. Remember, we’re here to support you on this journey.

We Will Provide:
  • Responsible Packaging Guides, including distribution and packaging best practices
  • Guidance via webinars and email communications
  • Access to industry leaders via roundtable discussions
  • Networking space with like-minded brands
  • Social Media Tool Kit to help share your story and progress
Now that you’ve officially committed to the Movement, it’s time to start making it happen.

The prAna team will be reaching out to provide the Responsible Packaging Guides, and inviting you to webinars and roundtable discussions to help support the work your team is doing in order to accomplish your goals. We are excited and truly honored to be part of this journey with you.

Packaging Equals: e-commerce shipping packaging and any on-product packaging such as, but not limited to; individual product bags or wraps, hang tags, joker tags, labels, label/hang-tag attachments, stickers, moisture-control packs or tissue, and protective wrappings on trims.

What this movement doesn’t include: master carton packaging, local or international shipping boxes/containers, and/or product storage at distribution centers. (But we certainly won’t be upset if you include these in your goals too!)

How Can I Join the Responsible Packaging Movement?
By joining this mission, you are aiming to make responsible choices in order to reduce single-use plastic packaging, virgin forest fiber packaging, and excess packaging waste in your everyday life. Since you are clearly a conscious consumer, we want you to create your own goal, something that you're truly passionate about.

Then share it with us and your friends on your favorite social media channel—be sure to tag @prana and #ReshapePackaging so we can follow along and support your journey.

Here’s some inspiration to help spark ideas for your own personal goal:

  • To avoid needing to use single-use food packaging to carry my leftovers and take-out orders, I commit to bringing my own re-usable containers to restaurants.
  • As I run out of my current beauty and self-care products, I commit to replacing them with brands that come in sustainable and/or refillable packaging.
  • I commit to reducing my use of paper products (paper towels, napkins, toilet paper, etc.) by either swapping them with re-usable options like cloth wipes or buying responsibly sourced options.
You are not in this alone. We realize that big goals need a lot of helping hands, and we know you’ll need support, tools, and a community to help you reach them. Success looks like all of us working together and striving towards progress. It won’t be perfect every day, and that’s totally okay.

To get started, we’re offering a number of ways for you to connect within the Movement. From guides to social media takeovers, we are here to support your journey.

We will provide:
  • Ideas on how to share your story and progress on social media
  • Collaboration space on social media for you and other like-minded community members
So you’ve joined the Movement, you’ve picked a goal that’s personal to you, and you’re ready to start working towards it every day. Now, it’s time to start posting.

Share your commitment on social by tagging @prana and #ReshapePackaging.
